Ebin stars in Idukki triumph

KOCHI: Forward Ebin Gopi struck thrice as host Idukki crushed Thiruvananthapuram 5-1 and won the State junior football title after a six-year break at the St. George High School Ground, Muthalakudam, on Sunday evening.

Ebin opened his account in the second minute through a lovely bicycle kick and then added two more, in the 18th and 54th minutes. Praveen (37th) and Mathews George (44th) scored the other goals. Ebin’s efforts helped him share the championship’s top goal-scorer award with Thiruvananthaupuram’s Sarath Gopal. Both finished with five goals. For Thiruvananthapuram, Jibson Justus netted the consolation goal in the 51 st minute.

Earlier, in the morning, Kollam defeated Malappuram 4-3 and finished third. The teams were goalless at the end of the regulation period.

The Kerala Football Association President, K. M. I. Mather. gave away the prizes.

Best player awards: Saneesh Babu (Idk, midfielder), Sadiq Ali (Mlp, defender), Jibson Justus (Tvm, forward), K.P. Nishanth (Mlp, goalkeeper). — Principal Correspondent
