U.P cancels allotment of land for coach factory

Atiq Khan

LUCKNOW: With the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday cancelling the order on acquisition of 189.25 hectares of Gram Samaj land for setting up a rail coach factory at Lalganj in Rae Bareli, the tussle between the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress-led UPA government intensified.

UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who has been elected to Parliament from Rae Bareli, is scheduled to preside over the ‘bhumi pujan’ (ground breaking ceremony) of the factory on Tuesday, and later address a public meeting at Lalganj.

Anger and protest by the local farmers was given as the reason for the cancellation of the land deed. An official spokesman said the District Magistrate of Rae Bareli had been asked to search for an alternate site.

The foundation of the Rs. 1000 crore unit was laid by Ms. Gandhi in February 2007 at a function at Lalganj.

The government’s decision seems to have thrown a spanner in the works of the Congress, although it is not clear whether she will undertake the visit now.
