“Situation in Assam returning to normal”

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: Union Minister of State for Home Shakeel Ahmed on Sunday said the situation in violence-hit Udalguri and Darrang districts in Assam was fast retuning to normality, but a sense of insecurity was still prevailing among inmates of relief camps.

Mr. Ahmed, who, along with two other members of the All-India Congress Committee, visited six relief camps in the two districts, told journalists that the Assam government’s decision to seek a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the clashes was welcomed by all.

The AICC team was deputed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi to asses the situation in Assam following the clashes between the Bodos and immigrant Muslim settlers.

Submit memoranda

Mr. Ahmed said the team would submit its report to Ms. Gandhi on Tuesday. The other two members of the AICC team were the former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Mukut Mithi, and senior Congress MP A.H. Khan. Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh also visited some relief camps. He announced an assistance of Rs. 50 lakh by his party to help the people staying in the relief camps and affected by the clashes.
