Financial assistance for farm women

R. Vimal Kumar

‘Promotion of

micro enterprise activities would uplift farm women in rural areas’

Tirupur: Socio-economic conditions of farm women in Tirupur block are all set to improve as the Department of Agriculture plans to extend financial assistance to them for establishing units to produce bio-fertilizers and compost during this financial year.

The assistance, to be offered as back-ended subsidy, will be given to a TANWABE (Tamil Nadu Women in Agri Business and Extension) group functioning under the ambit of the department at Amaravathipalayam for compost production from municipal wastes and to a similar group at Kattupalayam for production of bio-fertilizers like azosphyrillium and phospho bacteria. M. Subbiah, Assistant Director, Department of Agriculture, told The Hindu that the promotion of micro enterprise activities would uplift farm women in rural areas of the block by widening their earning sources. He said that the department would offer Rs 2.05 lakh as back-ended subsidy against the total cost of Rs 4.1 lakh estimated for establishment of compost production unit.

For bio-fertiliser production unit to be set up at Rs 2.5 lakh, subsidy was fixed at Rs 1.25 lakh.

The remaining amount needed should be raised by the beneficiaries (ie. farm women) either in the form of institutional credit or through contribution from among its members of the two groups.

Mr Subbiah said that farm women would be imparted training on the production of bio-fertilizers and compost prior to the setting up the units.

Resource persons from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University would be utilised to disseminate the techniques.

“Considering the growing importance of bio-fertilizers and compost as manure, farm women will be able to generate sizeable revenue from these units,” Mr Subbiah said.
