dated October 14, 1958: Moon rocket burns up

America’s “Pioneer” rocket, after zooming nearly one-third of the way to the moon, fell back early on October 13 into the earth’s atmosphere and was assumed to have been burned up. In announcing this the U.S. Air Force said, “During the last two hours of the historic flight, efforts were made to fire the retro-rocket (a device originally intended to orbit the “Pioneer” around the moon). No confirmation of successful firing was received”.
