NComputing to power computer education in State

Staff Reporter

The US-based company will extend basic knowledge to 18 lakh schoolchildren

Massive computer education programme in over 5,000 schools of the State

Computer labs will be installed and managed by outsourced companies for five years

Hyderabad: Over 18 lakh schoolchildren across the State are all set to learn the basics of using a computer and different software thanks to the shared computing technology provided by a U.S. based company, NComputing.

The technology was chosen by the government to implement a massive computer education programme in over 5,000 secondary schools of the State.

According to the programme, each school will have a 10-seat computer lab with two desktop PC’s and eight NComputing systems for students to learn the basics of a computer.

An NComputing system works on a shared basis wherein each student’s monitor, keyboard and mouse are connected to a shared PC through a small NComputing access device.

The device will help the school cut electricity costs as it uses one watt of electricity, which is very low compared to a normal PC, informed Chairman and CEO of NComputing, Stephen Dukker.

The systems will have Microsoft Windows Server operating system and Microsoft Office Suite for students to learn in addition to acquiring computer skills and learning subjects such as maths, said Chairman and Corporate Vice- President of Microsoft India Ravi Venkatesan.

Honing skills

The computer labs will be installed and managed by outsourced companies for five years, thus enabling school staff to develop their own skills and honing their computer-aided teaching capabilities.

Out of 5,000 schools, NIIT will manage 2,005 schools.

“It is good that the State has encouraged early adoption of computer education in schools,” added L. Balasubramanian, president, School Learning Solutions, NIIT.
