Jaleel Khan set for second innings in Congress

Special Correspondent

He along with his associates to take primary membership of the party today

VIJAYAWADA: With Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president D. Srinivas on Monday giving green signal to the re-entry of former MLA Jaleel Khan into the party fold, Mr. Khan is making arrangements to put up a grand show on Tuesday when he would formally take the primary membership of the party from the City Congress Committee president Pyla Sominaidu in Andhra Ratna Bhavan. Mr. Khan’s application for admission into the party that he left in 2004 after being denied the ticket to contest from Vijayawada West constituency was cleared by a screening committee, which took into account the views of those welcoming his entry as well as those opposing it. Based on its recommendation, Mr. Srinivas, against whom Mr. Khan levelled serious allegations in 2004, announced the decision to re-admit him.

Mr. Khan said on Monday that he, along with some of his associates, would take the primary membership of the party at 11.30 a.m. in Andhra Ratna Bhavan. At 3 p.m., a huge procession would be taken out from his residence in One Town to the new election office of MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on MG Road, where he would seek the cooperation of district Ministers and MLAs.

Mr. Khan, who is said to be the prime contender for the party ticket to contest from Vijayawada West constituency in the next elections, maintained that he nursed no ambition and was ready to work as per the directions of the party leadership. But, sources close to him said Mr. Khan would be making a strong bid for the ticket this time, more so because Bhavanipuram area, which has a sizeable Muslim population, has now become a part of the Vijayawada West constituency after delimitation.
