This Day That Age
General De Gaulle on October 13 took his first decisive step towards curbing the power of the military in Algeria by ordering all military men to withdraw from political organisations, and asking them not to stand for election next month. The Prime Minister, in ordering complete political freedom in the Algerian campaign for the November 23 elections for all candidates, including any demanding independence for Algeria, did not mention the “Public Safety Movement.” The May 13 take-over by this movement, which claims to be non-political, eventually led to Gen. de Gaulle’s return to power.
