Central jail planned in city

Special Correspondent

GUNTUR: Vijayawada jail is overcrowded and accommodation here will be expanded by constructing a new central jail or a spacious district jail, Coastal Range Deputy Inspector General of Jails Samuel Johnson said here on Tuesday.

Expressing concern over the overcrowding of jails in the State, he said that due to lack space in Vijayawada jail, convicts and trial accused were being taken to Rajahmundry. The government was coming up with modernisation of all the jails, he added.

Changing the behaviour of inmates and refining their thinking process in all possible ways was the prime concern of the Jails Department and it was taking the help of all religious leaders to teach them moral lessons on good behaviour, he observed. He agreed that there were some instances of corruption in jails. , which was providing access to cell phones to inmates at many places, but refused to buy the argument that it was a rampant practice.
