‘Mechanisation can overcome labour shortage in agriculture’
Staff Reporter
NAMAKKAL: Collector U. Sagayam called upon the farmers in the district to be more receptive to agricultural mechanisation to overcome the labour shortage problem.
Participating at the distribution of machines to farmers here recently, the Collector said that large scale utilisation of machines would minimise the labour requirement in the farming sector. It would also allow the farmers to carry out cultivation, harvest and post harvest activities in lesser time. The Government was extending subsidy to the farmers to purchase the equipment.
He said the department was also extending subsidy for replacing old motor pumpsets with new energy-saving ones.
Farmers belonging to the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe could avail of a maximum subsidy of 50 per cent, while for others the subsidy was 25 per cent. Subsidy worth Rs. 67.60 lakh would be provided for replacing old pumpsets in the current fiscal, the Collector said.
Later, the Collector distributed four maize husker sheller machines, two cono weeders, two paddy drum seeders and a coconut climber. The total value of these machines was Rs. 5.09 lakh.
