Five Kannadiga postgraduates to get scholarships

Bangalore: The Kannada Development Authority Chairman ‘Mukhyamantri’ Chandru on Wednesday reiterated the authority’s directive that all the signboards and advertisements should also be in Kannada. He said the officers of the urban bodies concerned would be held responsible for any failure in implementing the directive.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Chandru, also MLC, announced that a conference of the border districts would be organised at Joida in Uttara Kannada district in December, to discuss the problems faced by the people, particularly Kannadigas there. The action plan of the project was being prepared and it would be funded by the Department of Kannada and Culture and the authority.

Mr. Chandru, who held a meeting of the authority at Karwar yesterday to study the performance of the implementation of Kannada in the district, ordered the Deputy Commissioner to monitor the progress and set right and lapses, if any. Similarly, taluk-level utsavs would be held in the border taluks to create awareness about the importance of Kannada. This would be held at Joida, he said. Mr. Chandru said that five Kannadiga students, each studying Kannada at the postgraduate-level — at the Department of Kannada in Kuppam University in Andhra Pradesh, Madras University in Tamil Nadu and at Kasaragod in Kerala — would be given a monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,500.

He said that the SSLC/PUC students in Kannada-medium, who score maximum marks at the taluk-level would be felicitated. Mr. Chandru has been made a member of the advisory committee, headed by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, for selection of Rajyotsava awards.
