Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has questioned the rationale of the proposed LDF-sponsored stir in New Delhi led by the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues on October 17. In an article released for publication on Wednesday, Mr. Chandy said the LDF government led by V.S. Achuthanandan had failed to conceive a project of its own besides turning its back on several pro-people schemes of the Central government. “In fact, the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues should compliment the Central government for approving projects worth Rs.31,503 crore, sanctioning 12 Central establishments and implementing 30 Centrally sponsored schemes.” Listing out the government’s failures one by one, Mr. Chandy said the LDF’s policy was to impose additional burden on the people by increasing tariff rates for several services. The anti-Centre stir was nothing but a vain attempt to conceal the total failure of the LDF government, he said. The State government’s failure to properly follow up issues led to the cut in rice quota and electricity from the Central pool. The LDF had earlier announced a similar stir in protest against the Centre’s alleged failure to provide assistance for natural calamities. But the ruling front had to call off the stir when it turned out that the government had not even given the mandatory application for assistance. He said that instead of finding solutions to the problems faced by the people, the LDF was ignoring their aspirations by stage-managing the Munnar eviction campaign and running a controversy over the establishment of Special Economic Zones.
