Tamil chauvinism

The article “The dangers of Tamil chauvinism” by Malini Parthasarathy (Oct. 14) was very well written and important. It echoes the sentiments of a wide spectrum of readers. The atrocities committed by the LTTE against the civilians and the Tamil leaders of Sri Lanka, and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi should never be overlooked while discussing the present situation in the island nation.

R. Parthasarathy,

Chennai

Ms Parthasarathy’s article should open the eyes of those who blindly support the LTTE. Love for Tamil and Tamilians is welcome but blind support for a terrorist organisation is not.

Although I have my differences with The Hindu’s editorial stand on some issues, I cannot but admire the intellectual honesty and consistency with which the newspaper has approached issues like the Sri Lankan Tamil problem. It takes rare courage to take a contrarian view on a matter which is a potential rabble-rouser, that too from a State where the public opinion on the subject has been hijacked by parochial political mobilisation.

Whatever the compulsions of coalition politics, the UPA government should not forget that the LTTE is a banned organisation in India. It is one thing to support the Tamil cause and quite another to espouse the cause of the LTTE.

Ms Parthasarathy deserves praise for her forthright article. Prabakaran is far more dangerous and despicable than the jihadis. Peace-loving citizens of India and Sri Lanka look forward to the day he is removed from the scene.

V. Mahalingam,

Srirangam

It is unfair to compare the ethnic strife in Sri Lanka with the separatist uprising in Kashmir. Sri Lanka is in fact comparable to pre-1971 Bangladesh, pre-independent Kosovo and existing Palestine.

A majority of Tamils in Tamil Nadu and the rest of the world do not support the LTTE and Prabakaran. Innocent Tamil civilians of Sri Lanka should not be made to suffer on account of the appalling crime committed by the LTTE.

P. Amaresan Pattusamy,

Tiruvannamalai
