ALAPPUZHA: The Elephant Lovers’ Association, Thrissur, has welcomed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests T.M. Manoharan’s decision to move, Kannan, the tusker that was brutally tortured by its mahouts at the Mavelikara Evoor Sri Krishna temple, to the custody of the State Wildlife Department for treatment. The Association secretary V.K. Venkitachalam said that this was the first time that the State took such a move. However, there remains more to be done. Instead of trying to teach Malayalam to an elephant from Assam or Arunachal Pradesh, it should be sent back to its natural habitat or trans-located to wherever its mother was. A memorandum demanding the same had been submitted to the Principal Chief Conservator, Mr. Venkitachalam said. The plight of Kannan came to light last week when two youngsters captured on their mobile phone cameras scenes of the mahouts brutally torturing the elephant. The visuals were passed on to television channels and Forests Minister Binoy Viswom issued instructions for an enquiry.
