KOCHI: The city is getting a flavour of contemporary dance. The District Information Office, in association with District Tourism Promotion Council and Kerala Fine Arts Society, will organise The Sound of Silence – a dance show by Samudra Performing Arts, a leading dance theatre troupe. Works by Madhu Gopinath and Vaikom Sajeev of Samudra have been acknowledged in many international festivals and their latest moment of glory came when their choreography was given the Best Choreographers Award at the 54th National Film Awards for their work in Ratrimazha. The duo is known for their compositions like Jalam and Rhythm. Since the troupe was formed in 1998, it has toured extensively and participated in Hong Kong Asian Festival, Finland Dance Festival, dance festivals in France and Italy, Royal Opera House, London, at the Frankfurt Book Festival and Indian festivals at Spain, Portugal, France, and Edinburgh Festival among others. The new production, The Sound of Silence, is conceived as a dialogue between movement and sound, body and soul and tradition and modernity. Various stages of the Life Chakra or the Wheel of Life like rebirth, sensuality, universal rhythm and power, are delineated through the composition.
