Heavy rain damages houses

Normal life hit, road traffic paralysed in Tuticorin

DISSOLVED: Rainwater stagnating in a salt pan adjacent to Tuticorin-Tiruchendur highway on Thursday.

TUTICORIN: A heavy downpour last night accompanied by lightning and thunder lashed the town for about three to four hours, paralysing road traffic and affecting normal life. According to Revenue Administration for Disaster Management and Mitigation Department, it has caused havoc to houses in Vaipar, Sippikulam, Kallurani and partially damaged those in Vedanatham and Kayathar blocks of Tuticorin.

The rainfall recorded in mm in Tuticorin district is as follows: Vaipar-111, Kayathar-49, Srivaikuntam-79, Maniyachi-76, Tuticorin-58.3, Sathankulam-8, Tiruchendur-11.1, Ottapidaram-31, Surangudi-70, Vedanatham-50, Vilathikulam-106, Kulasekarapattinam-4, Keelaarasaradi-20, Kadambur-52, Kalugumalai-57, Kovilpatti-59 and Ettayapuram-57.

Madurai

Rainfall in the catchment areas has increased flow into the Periyar dam following which the level has gone up.
