THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Classes for the much-delayed PG diploma course in Geo Information Science and Technology began at the Department of Geology on October 15. The course is being offered under the Innovative Programmes scheme of the University Grants Commission by the Centre for Geo-Information Science and Technology at the Department. The ten-seat course has admitted candidates who are post graduates in geology, geography, environmental sciences and physics. According to the Head of the Department of Geology V. Prasannakumar the curriculum contains preliminary modules on geo-spatial topic to provide students with the requisite earth science background. The course will be handled by a panel of teachers at the university and by experts from agencies including the Indian Space Research Organisation, the National Remote Sensing Agency and the C-DAC. More details about the course can be had from the web site http://cgist.ac.in The Centre has plans to offer short-term certificate courses and part-time training programmes for employed persons, Dr. Prasannakumar added.
