CPI picketing thwarted

Special Correspondent

GUNTUR: A massive agitation of the Communist Party of India by picketing the District Collector’s office demanding house sites for 1 lakh poor was thwarted by the police on Thursday.

Party State council secretary K. Narayana, who arrived at the District Collector’s office in an auto-rickshaw avoiding arrest by police, demanded release of 300 of the party cadre, who were taken into custody at the railway station when they arrived from Vinukonda and Macherla to attend the programme.

Heavy presence of riot-police personnel with special gear created some tense moments and as soon as Mr. Narayana arrived, he demanded the ordering of survey for house sites .

Mr. Narayana and other leaders were arrested after their delegation met the Collector, and were taken to Nagarmapalem police station.

Describing the police act as fascist, he said that the picketing persons did not want to resort to violence.

District council secretary Muppala Nageswara Rao, city secretary Jangala Ajy Kumar and other leaders were present on the occasion.
