Kochi: Benchmarking by an independent body is essential for developing mature indigenous technology, S. Ananthanarayanan, Director, Naval and Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), has said. Addressing a gathering of students from various city schools and colleges at Bharath Tourist Home, Mr. Ananthanarayanan said there was a need for establishment of a consortium of industries to produce the systems developed indigenously. “Industries with global vision in terms of production and marketing have to be in place to catalyse the self-reliance in defence technology,” he said. The session on ‘Self-reliance in Defence and Space’ was organised as part of the ongoing Swashraya Bharath-2008 seminar and exhibition at Ernakulam Sivakshethra ground. NPOL, which is participating in the exhibition, places a special focus on its competence on materials science, ocean science and transducer science. Six scientists are available at its stall to brief students and the public on nanotechnology and micro electro mechanical systems.
