Murder: 3 arrested

Special Correspondent

KANNUR: The Kasaragod police on Friday arrested three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in connection with the murder of a Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activist at Kasaragod on October 14.

A police team headed by Kasaragod Circle Inspector M.V. Sukumaran arrested the three youths identified as BJP workers at Mayippadi, six km from the Kasaragod town, on Friday as they were planning to leave the area. The arrested were Udayan alias Bhagya Udayan, P.K. Manikantan alias Mani and Rajesh alias Raju.

The police said the youths confessed to having committed the crime.

The DYFI activist, Rafeeque, 22, of Badiradka Lakshamveedu Colony, was stabbed to death at Kambar on Tuesday last.

The police said the murder of Rafeeque, who was former Periyadka DYFI unit secretary, was apparently sequel to a dispute between two groups of people over a love affair between a boy and a girl belonging to two different communities. The police said Rafeeque had come to the defence of the boy.
