Corrections and clarifications

* * Reports on Aravind Adiga’s Man Booker Prize win said his book “The White Tiger” impressed the judges with its power to “knock your socks off ”. It led to a number of queries on what the phrase meant. The phrase (informal) is “to knock (or blow) someone’s socks off”, which means to amaze or impress someone.

* * Sri Lanka `A’ was incorrectly mentioned as Sri Lanka in the text (four instances) and in the scoreboard in"Sri Lanka `A’ takes first innings lead" (Sport, October 16, 2008)

* * In "Poovamma picks up silver in 400m" (Sport, October 16) a sentence says "Rebecca and Canada’s Shela Johnson were both timed at 55.20, the photo-finish separating the silver and bronze medallists." It should have been for the third and fourth positions.

* * Yuki Bhambri (Ind) bt Paul Wilson (Malay) is reported under Women in the results column of the report "Ajit Patil claims Gold" (Sport, October 15). Yuki Bhambri is a boy.

* * In "Gilles Simon takes out James Blake at Madrid Masters" (Sport, October 15), the result said Simone Bolleli bt Andy Murray 0-6, 1-2 retired. The figures got reversed. It should have been 6-0, 2-1 retired.

* * *
