This Day That Age
India with 29 other countries tabled a draft resolution on October 16 in the Special Committee of the United Nations General Assembly which resumed its debate on “race conflict” in South Africa. The resolution called on member States of the United Nations to “bring their policies into conformity with their obligations under the Charter to promote the observance of human rights and fundamental freedom.” It also asked the Assembly to express its “regret and concern” over the Union’s lack of response to its appeals. The United States supported the Indian resolution for the first time in seven years. Although critical of South Africa’s apartheid policy, the U.S. has not voted in favour of any resolution on the subject in the General Assembly in the past.
