dated October 18, 1958: Martial law in Pak

General Ayub Khan said in Karachi on October 17 that martial law would not be lifted in Pakistan until the political, social, economic and administrative mess had been cleared. In a statement he said: “There seems to be fear in the minds of the people that if martial law is lifted soon the old order will return with its attendant weaknesses and evils and all the good that has been done will be lost. Let me assure every one that whereas martial law will not be retained a minute longer than is necessary, it will not be lifted a minute earlier than the purpose for which it has been imposed has been fulfilled, and that purpose is the clearance of the political, social, economic and administrative mess that has been created in the past.”
