This refers to the dismissal of 1,900 employees by Jet Airways and their reinstatement after a day. The crisis faced by the domestic aviation sector can be overcome in various ways other than cutting jobs. The government can be wheedled into reducing the taxes on aviation fuel and airport charges. Overheads can be reduced by cutting down frills. Flights can be withdrawn from non-viable destinations. Employees should not be at the receiving end of the miscalculations of the corporate honchos. Before the trend goes out of control, the government should take suitable action to prevent people from losing their jobs for mistakes which are not theirs.
