‘Bring down rice price further’
HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has asked the Civil Supplies department to bring down the price of superfine rice below Rs. 20 a kg.
At a review meeting with officials here on Friday, Dr. Reddy was informed that the price of superfine variety (Sona Masuri) has gone up in the open market since there was 90 per cent demand for this variety. While officials maintained that the open market retail price of superfine variety was brought down from Rs. 28 to Rs. 23 a kg in the retail shops, the other varieties were sold between Rs. 14 to Rs 18 a kg. The Chief Minister not convinced by the explanation of the officials directed them to sell the superfine variety below Rs. 20 a kg at any cost. He expressed displeasure over the Government getting the blame for the price rise.
He also directed the Civil Supplies department to work with the IT department to weed out bogus and duplicate ration cards.
Expressing concern at the rise in prices of vegetables particularly tomatoes, he asked the horticulture and marketing departments to intervene and bring down the prices.
