Cultural programmes mark Onam celebrations

Festival time: Malayalis celebrating Onam at an event organised by the Salem Kerala Samajam in Salem on Sunday.

SALEM: Competitions and cultural programmes marked the Onam celebrations organised by the Salem Kerala Samajam here on Sunday.

Confederation of Tamil Nadu Malayalee Associations vice-president Shyamala Jayaprakash inaugurated the celebrations in the presence of general secretary Soman Mathew.

Competitions including carrom, chess, drawing and musical chair were organised for children aged below 15 years. Cultural programmes including Chenda and Panchavadiyam and traditional dances also formed part of the celebrations.

A large number of women participated in the Pookkalam competition. Winners of the competitions were presented with prizes. The organisers served food to the poor as part of the celebrations. Samajam president P.K. Kurian presided.
