NEW DELHI: Four media persons were beaten up allegedly by a group of Samajwadi Party activists during a rally at Jamia Nagar here. One person has been arrested in this connection. Trouble broke out when a group of media persons surrounded Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh for his comments while he was leaving the rally venue around 10 p.m. “Soon after Amar Singh and other political leaders including Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee left, locals activists of the Samajwadi Party started hurling abuses at media persons holding them responsible for painting Muslims as terrorists. This led to a heated exchange of words between the two groups and soon the situation turned violent. The party cadres rained blows on media persons,” said Javed, a reporter with Star News channel, who also sustained injuries. Accusing the police of not acting promptly, Javed said: “It continued for over 30 minutes. There was a huge police presence, but no one came to the rescue of media persons. Only a couple of policemen came forward to our help.” The other three media persons who sustained injuries have been identified as Asif (Mahuwa Channel), Afzal (Sahara Samay) and Balal Gosai (Live India). The injured were taken to Holy Family Hospital where three of them were discharged after first-aid. Javed had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. He was discharged on Saturday evening. A case has been registered against local Samajwadi Party leaders Amanatullah and Mohammad Azhar under the Indian Penal Code on the complaint of one of the injured, Asif. “We have registered a case for voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint and arrested Mohammad Azhar of Okhla.” said a senior police officer.
