JNTU V-C lays emphasis on effective use of ICT

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: As JNTU, Kakinada, emerges from its nascent stage to compete with other universities, it faces the tough task of effectively deploying the information and communications technology (ICT), which has become a prerequisite for an efficient and transparent administration.

“The emphasis on ICT is more than ever before, and being a technological university, JNTU has to be in the forefront of extending its benefits to all the stakeholders, namely, students, their parents and teaching fraternity,” says Vice-Chancellor Allam Appa Rao.

Speaking at a workshop on ‘Deployment of ICT for the Heads of Departments of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Information Technology’ of JNTU (Kakinada) affiliated colleges here on Sunday, Prof. Appa Rao said concerted efforts should be made to improve the administrative set-up with the help of ICT and conduct on-line examinations without any scope for hacking and other malpractices.

“This is where the teachers of ICT should come up with solutions for various problems that are bound to crop up in establishing connectivity between the constituent colleges of JNTU,” he said. It should be ensured that the students and their parents feel confident about the university by developing a web-based interface with advanced features of protection of databases and access controls.

Challenging task

Prof. Rao said the most important task on hand was how to conduct the examinations on-line without leaving any chance for hackers to make a mockery of the system. There were complaints of hacking earlier, but the university can ill afford to allow such things to tarnish its image and also spoil the career of genuine students. Workshop convener and Head of Department of CSE of JNTU, Kakinada, J.V. Ramana Murthy said plans were on the anvil to set up a Virtual Private Network and video connectivity. JNTU Registrar V. Ravindra, JNTU Engineering College principal E.V Prasad, vice-principal B. Prabhakar Rao and P.S Avadhani and P. Srinivasa Rao of Andhra University Engineering College were among those who spoke.
