Jubilation: UDF candidates and supporters taking out a march at Anakkayam, near Malappuram, on Sunday after winning the elections held to the director board of Anakkayam Service Cooperative Bank. MALAPPURAM: The candidates of the United Democratic Front (UDF) won the elections held to the director board of the Anakkayam Service Cooperative Bank, near here, on Sunday. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) boycotted the elections held amid tight security after the intervention of the court. The UDF panel bagged all the seven seats by securing 1,108 votes. T. Abdussalam was elected president of the bank. The UDF took out a rally at Anakkayam following the victory. Although the elections were held peacefully, the run-up to the ballot had been marred by wrangles, burning of ballot and tension. Activists of the LDF and the UDF had treaded the brink of violence several times during the run-up. The elections had captured wider attention when the UDF candidates had to seek police protection to file their nominations after LDF men allegedly prevented them from filing papers. Two photojournalists were beaten up reportedly by CPI(M) activists while covering the nomination proceedings. Indian Union Muslim League’s Malappuram constituency secretary P. Ubaidulla said UDF’s victory UDF was historic. The CPI(M) had tried everything possible to scuttle the elections, he said. However, the CPI(M) denied the allegations. It said the UDF had engaged in manipulations to win the elections.
