An officer on special duty to hear public grievances

KARAIKAL: As part of a comprehensive master plan being worked out to make Karaikal an educational hub of Puducherry, a finishing school for college students would start functioning from next month, Public Works and Higher Education Minister M.G.H.F. Shah Jahan said here.

He said that the government was committed to the upliftment of Karaikal, which was considered by many to be more backward than Puducherry.

To ensure that the people of Karaikal got their just due, he said that at least one minister would visit the area from Puducherry each month to review the progress of works.

The Council of Ministers had come up with a plan along with the district administration to develop a comprehensive master plan for Karaikal over the next 20 years.

This plan was being worked on, and based on this many infrastructure projects would be taken up, the Minister said addressing a press conference.

He also said that a NIT could come to Karaikal in the near future as the government was identifying a site of 300 acres needed to house the institute in both Puducherry and Karaikal.

An Information Technology park would also come up alongside the SEZ for which land acquisition would start soon, he said.

The Minister also announced that an Officer on Special Duty would be appointed for Karaikal immediately to allow the public to have their grievances redressed immediately.

He also said that a desilting project would be taken up by the government with NABARD funding soon to ensure continued groundwater supply to residents, and promised that the underground drainage system planned for the city would be taken up as soon as possible.
