Police Commemoration Day to pay tribute to martyrs

UNBEARABLE LOSS: Chennaiah and Penchalamma, parents of constable A. Keshavulu, who was killed in the Maoist attack. (Right) Keshavulu.

Kaluvai (Nellore dist.): “We could not believe that our son in no more. Keshavulu will be always in our hearts. He is a martyr forever,” say Anakarla Chennaiah and Penchalamma, parents of A. Keshavulu (23), who died in the naxal attack in Balimela reservoir on Andhra Orissa Border (AOB) on June 29 this year.

The couple eke out livelihood by doing labour work in the village and is in deep sorrow with the death of their only son.

Speaking to The Hindu Keshavulu’s mother says: “We thought our son was posted at Venkatagiri police station in the district and hoped that he will stay with us. Keshavulu joined duty just three months before the incident and had not done harm to any naxalite.”

A native of Kaluvai, Keshavulu studied up to 10th class in Zilla Parishad High School in the mandal and completed Intermediate in Vidavaluru village near Nellore.

He joined as a constable in Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) in 2006 and underwent training for nine months in Kurnool.

After training he was posted in ninth battalion and later shifted to Greyhounds and posted in Visakhapatnam.

Denied last glimpse

“If Keshavulu had not joined the Police Department, he would have been with us doing some agriculture work. We could not even see his face after his death as the body was fished out ten days after the incident in a highly decomposed condition,” says Chennaiah, tears rolling down his cheeks on seeing his son’s photograph.

Keshavulu’s cousin A. Chandrasekhar, who is working as a home guard in Kaluvai police station said: “ It was only after his death I came to know that he joined Greyhounds after going through the photographs (from his bag) taken during training.”

Salary offering

“My son took only three months’ salary and offered the first salary to the village goddess. Even the ‘grama devata’ did not save him and took him away at a tender age,” Penchalamma bemoaned.

Superintendent of Police B. Malla Reddy will unveil the martyrs’ pylon erected by the local police in Kaluvai village and pay tributes to the police martyrs to mark the Police Martyrs Commemoration Day on October 21.
