Less importance to useful bus services

Connecting the stops on Karl Marx Road and Mahatma Gandhi Road, bus services 79B and 79E of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), with Housing Board Colony as its destination, are of tremendous use to commuters. Unfortunately, the city division authorities of the APSRTC are giving less importance to these services.

As a result, commuters are forced to wait for 40 minutes and up to one hour some times, to get the bus. Those who can’t wait for the bus are boarding auto-rickshaws. The auto-rickshaw service between Poranki and Nidamanuru is a good example to show how auto-rickshaw drivers are making the best of the absence of city buses. It is time for the authorities of the APSRTC to look into the issue seriously.

In view of the ever-increasing vehicular traffic on the city roads, the traffic police will have to focus on certain issues to avoid inconvenience to road users. The ‘free-left’ provision is not available at most junctions and it resulted in frequent traffic jams. Once the ‘free left’ is provided, vehicular traffic will be streamlined at the junctions.

For this, many junctions have to be widened and space should be allocated with specific markings. Besides this, zebra marking has to be done, where the provision of road crossing has been provided for the pedestrians.

An integral part of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, Ajithsingh Nagar area, has not been divided into blocks and streets.

There are no names for the streets in this area and same is the case with blocks. There are no boards at the street corners indicating the door numbers of that particular street or block.

As a result, people who come to this area from outside are facing several difficulties to locate a particular street or house. The civic authorities are requested to arrange indication boards in this area.

There are no basic amenities for commuters at the busy Gudivada bus station of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. At the platform where Machilipatnam-bound buses halt, there is no shelter for commuters. Absence of drinking water is another problem for commuters. Those who entered into the bus station premises must depend on tea and other petty shops even for drinking water. The authorities concerned are requested to look into these issues.

There is every need to conduct HIV tests on pregnant women, who are among the high-risk group of the disease. Steps should be taken to prevent the spread of the disease from mother to child.

A recent study revealed that about 50 per cent of pregnant women, who are tested HIV positive, are not turning up to hospitals for delivery.

There is a need to create awareness among people about the disease and it should be included in the syllabus at high school level. We have to consider the fact that countries like Thailand and South Africa have introduced HIV/AIDS as a subject at the secondary level.
