TDP plans campaign on price rise

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) here has decided to hit the ruling Congress very hard on the question of checking prices of essential commodities by launching a campaign using posters, street-corner meetings and public mobilisation awareness camps.

Naidu’s advice

A team of leaders, who met TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu a few days ago, started following up on the advice of Mr. Naidu to create awareness about the fact that corruption rampant in the present regime was the chief reason for spiralling rise in prices of essential commodities.

The opposition party wanted to send a message to the public that corruption in the regime of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy led to price escalation though there was excess production of food grains as per the words of Dr. Reddy himself.

The TDP urban leadership led by vice-president Katragadda Nagamalleswara Rao (Katragadda Babu) chalked out a programme to put in place a mechanism for going about the campaign. He released posters with slogans “nailing” the Congress Government for its so-called failure over price rise.

The posters contained pictures of Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, Balakrishna and Jr. NTR appealing to the public to rise in agitation against the “indifference” of the government in bringing down the prices.

Mr. Katragadda Babu said that the Chief Minister boastfully talked about cultivation of food grain crops in a record extent of land in the State, but this had no effect on keeping the prices of essential commodities in check. To begin with, the TDP leadership planned to distribute the posters and hold meetings in the nook and corner of the Vijayawada West Assembly constituency involving the rank and file of the party. The campaign also aims at pointing out the difference in prices of various commodities in the present government when compared to that under the previous regime of Mr. Chandrababu Naidu.

The TDP is also demanding that white ration cards be given to people of needy sections even above the poverty line in view of the fact that inflation and the abnormally high cost of living had became a heavy burden to almost all sections of society.
