Special drive on to improve policing

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Rural Police are on an extensive drive to improve the quality of policing. The drive, titled Operation Periyar 2008, will be on for a month.

The accent of the drive will be to prevent occurrence of property crimes and detect the property cases which are under investigation and to check communal tension or factional disputes.

The drive also aims to overhaul the administrative system in place for the police. By doing so, the team aims to minimise delays in investigation and execution of warrants, efficient management of office records. “The drive will be implemented in three phases, with proper review of implemented components,” said P. Vijayan, Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam Rural. The first phase of the project started on Monday and will be on till October 22.

Besides improving the records available on habitual offenders and rowdies, the first phase will put the migrant labourers and ‘rent-a-car’ operators under the scanner. The move to collect and register details of the migrant population becomes significant as this huge floating population has been under a cloud of suspicion. It was reported that they were being used by extremists as a cover.

This aspect was highlighted after the Indian Army recovered forged voter’s identification cards in suspected terrorists, one of which had name and address of a person from Perumbavoor. It was then pointed out that the extremists might have got hold of the details using their contacts here.

Another policing step to be taken up during the drive will be to identify accident-prone spots and improve the traffic system. This will mean deploying more police personnel and revising the traffic flow, wherever necessary.

Also, stage carriers and taxi vehicles will be checked during early morning hours, between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., when the policing is expected to be lax and hence used by anti-social activities.

A list of persons engaged in hawala transactions will be prepared. The second phase will be on from October 23 to November 1 and the third phase will be from November 2 to 12.
