Electronic media should be self-regulatory: Jana

Special Correspondent

Concern over crime-related episodes on TV channels

HYDERABAD: Electronic media should have a self-regulating mechanism at the State-level to prevent telecast of programmes that would be detrimental to the society, said Home Minister K. Jana Reddy here on Monday.

The Home Minister held a review meeting along with Information and Public Relations Minister Anam Ramanarayan Reddy with the officials of Home, Law and Information and Public Relations Departments.

The meeting was convened in response to the complaints and concern expressed by leaders and several organisations about crime related episodes telecast on various TV channels. Such programmes might end up fanning the criminal intent in the society instead of their stated purpose of alerting the public, they said.

Round table

Rajya Sabha member V.Hanumantha Rao also recently organised a round table on the subject with representatives from various organisations and submitted a representation to the Home Minister.

Mr. Jana Reddy said that existing laws were enough to regulate such programmes and it was not the intention of the Government to harass the media. But media too should be sensitive to the negative impact of such programmes. If there was no change in the attitude of the management of TV channels, then Government would bring in necessary amendments to the law, he asserted.
