Congress, Left condemn attacks

NEW DELHI: The Congress and the Left parties on Monday condemned the MNS attacks on north Indian job aspirants in Mumbai.

Describing the attacks as both “senseless and meaningless,” Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said the assailants were ignorant of the fact that candidates from various parts of the country were allotted to take examination for the all-India service at various Railway Recruitment Centres. She said the question of representation depended on the success in examination.

She said the party urged the Maharashtra government to take stringent action against those involved.

In its statement, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said this was not the first time that this “blatantly regional chauvinist outfit” had attacked those from outside Maharashtra.

“This is a blatant assault on the Constitution which the State government of Maharashtra is duty bound to protect,” it said.

At a press conference, CPI(M) Parliamentary party leader Sitaram Yechury said the Director-General of Railway Protection Force had informed the State government of the move to hold examinations in Mumbai and charged the administration with being “callous” in not having taken preventive steps.

The CPI Central Secretariat said the “divisive and fascistic parochial” campaign of the MNS was aimed at disrupting peace in metropolitan Mumbai and it should not be tolerated anymore. “Any leniency shown to these divisive forces will have far-reaching consequences for the unity of the country,” it said.
