DMK calls for steps to save Sri Lankan Tamils

NEW DELHI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday drew the attention of the Lok Sabha towards the “continued killing of innocent” Tamil civilians by the Sri Lankan Army and asked the Centre to take urgent steps to stop the suffering of the Tamils there and rush relief materials to the displaced persons.

Raising the matter, C. Kuppusami said in the ongoing hostilities against the LTTE, the Sri Lankan Army had unleashed aerial attacks and a volley of bullets on innocent Tamil civilians. There were more than two lakh internally displaced persons who were languishing due to lack of food, water, transport and fuel. The security situation in Jaffna peninsula remained tense due to continued aerial attacks, he said.

Taking the deteriorating situation in North Sri Lanka into consideration, the DMK had urged the Prime Minister and the Centre to persuade Sri Lanka to stop the ongoing hostilities on humanitarian ground and to stop any strategic support from the Indian side, Mr. Kuppuswami told the House.

An all-party meeting gave an ultimatum till October 28 for the Centre to act and all MPs from Tamil Nadu have decided to resign to protest against the killing of Tamil civilians. Most of them have already submitted resignation letters to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, he said.
