Hawala racket kingpin arrested

Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat police claimed to have arrested a kingpin of the Indo-Gulf hawala racket which was believed to be providing monetary support for the terror attacks in the country.

Majid Patel, along with one Iqbal, was considered to be the key operators of hawala rackets in western India, was nabbed in Broach through inputs received from the local crime branch. His two accomplices managed to flee when the police raided his place, but Majid was caught by the police.

Majid was also wanted for the 2002 terrorist attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar. The police said Majid and Iqbal were known to be two most important Broach-based hawala racketeers funding the terror attacks from money received from the hawala companies based in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. The police expect to tighten the screw on the free flow of funds after questioning Majid on his links with the Gulf countries.
