PUDUCHERRY: Several parts of Puducherry received heavy rain since Monday evening. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast isolated heavy rain in Puducherry during the next 48 hours. Rain or thundershowers is likely to occur at most places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Puducherry received 9 cm rainfall till 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Several schools and colleges declared holiday for Tuesday. As part of monsoon preparedness, the Puducherry Municipality plans to desilt u-drains in all areas within its limits. According to local body officials, the Public Works Department would desilt the Uppar Canal and Grand Canal. “As of now, we are removing blocks from small drains to ensure free flow of water. The drains are blocked by garbage and plastic bags. We have asked for funds to take up desilting of u-drains. The work will begin once we receive funds. The problem of water stagnation in low-lying areas is largely reduced now,” the officials said. Motors to pump out water were also kept ready. “Works for desilting major u-drains at Nainarmandapam, Suduna Nagar have been taken up. The works should be complete before the rains,” said another official. VillupuramVillupuram district has been experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall in the past few days. Inflow into all the reservoirs in the district has improved considerably. The Gomukhi dam, with a total capacity of 328 million cubic feet, is getting an inflow of 776 cusecs. The Sathanur dam is fast filling up with an inflow of 590 cusecs of water. As against the maximum height of 119 ft, the storage level stands at 105.6 ft. The Veedur dam is getting an inflow of 205.63 cusecs and the water level has touched to 17.9 ft (maximum 32 ft). The Manimutharu is getting an inflow of 150 cusecs (total capacity 219.3 mcft). Rainfall recorded till Tuesday morning: Villupuram – 32 mm, Vanur – 75 mm, Tindivanam – 40, Ginjee – 52, Ulundurpet – 51 mm, Kallakurichi --- 35 mm, Sankarapuram – 22 mm, Thirukkoilur – 25 mm.
