Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ten-day sailing expedition conducted by 1(Kerala) Naval Unit NCC culminated successfully at the Akkulam Boat Club here today. The participating cadets were felicitated and presented with medals and certificates by Col. AN Rae, Group Commander NCC.

The expedition covered a total distance of over 410 km both ways and covered Ashtamudi, Kayamkulam, Punnamada and Vembanad lakes cross four districts of Kerala—Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Kottayam.

The expedition halted for meals and stay overnight at various churches located along the inland waterway. Besides the cadets, the expedition team comprised two senior division Associate NCC Officers and five regular Naval instructors and six other supporting staff under the Command of Commander Krishan Kumar Commanding Officer, 1(Kerala) Naval Unit NCC, Thiruvananthapuram.

The cadets got training in sailing/pulling and making associated logistic arrangements including medical aid.

Main aim

The main aim of this expedition was to infuse a spirit of adventure, a sense of courage, individuality, sportsmanship and comradeships amongst the participating cadets besides toughening them and making them learn the basics of seamanship necessary for waterborne adventure activities.

The cadets got ‘hands on’ experience and ample opportunity for sailing and pulling in whaler boats.

These cadets will eventually represent NCC Directorate (Kerala & Lakshadweep) in various National level competitions in waterborne activities in the near future.

The cadets also got a first hand knowledge of the living styles of inhabitants and in turn provided the populace, an insight of the NCC and its multi-faceted activities.

Opportunity was given to the cadets to sail to the famous ‘Pathiramanal’ island and the tourist spots at Kumarakom and Mohamma in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts.

The expedition’s members also availed of the opportunity to undertake social/community development activity during their halt en-route.

They interacted with the local people and participated in a cleanliness drive for a ‘clean and green’ Kerala.

The cadets also educated the villagers for keeping the surroundings not only clean and green for a healthy living but also dry for preventing any mosquito menace.

Apart from this the cadet also undertook social activities like visiting and interacting with the inmates of Old Age Home, Schools for Special Children and Primary School Children in Thannermukkom Panchayat area thus spreading the message of ‘Unit, Integrity and Discipline’ which are the hall marks of NCC.
