Bangalore: The attack on 22-year-old Karthika marks the 68th recorded acid attack case in Karnataka since 1999. While these are reported cases, there are many that go unreported, say the activists of Campaign and Struggle Against Acid Attacks on Women.
The State Government has announced a medical aid package which entitles a victim to financial help of up to Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 25,000 as compensation. But there are no laws to regulate sale of concentrated acids, which is one of the demands of the Campaign and other women’s organisations.
Hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid have been used in most attacks on women, resulting in maiming them for a lifetime in some cases and killing them in others. These are easily available.
The acid used to attack Ms. Karthika is suspected to be sulphuric acid.
