Udupi
Udupi: Members of Savita Samaj have urged the Government to recognise their community as one of the Scheduled Castes. This demand was put forth at the “Misalati jagriti samavesha” (reservation awareness convention) organised by the Udupi district unit of Savita Samaj Samudaya Misalati Okkoota here on Tuesday. Addressing the convention, Karkala MLA H. Gopal Bhandary said that the members of the community should join the mainstream. He said that reservation was required not only for the community but also for other weaker sections of society. More opportunities were required for the people of the community. People of this community should march forward with confidence, keeping aside their diffidence and inferiority complex, he added. All MLAs of Udupi district were committed to the uplift and welfare of the people of this community, he said. MLAs K. Raghupati Bhat, Halady Srinivas Shetty and Lalaji Mendon and president of the district unit of the okkoota Govind Bhandary were present. DemandsLeaders of the community urged the Government to include the community in the reservation list. Provision was sought in law to punish those who insulted community members. A welfare corporation should be established for the uplift of the community, they said.
