High Court Bench: BJP seeks LDF clarification

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader O. Rajagopal has demanded that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) explain the reason for the delay in putting up a firm proposal before the Centre for a Bench of the High Court in the capital.

Mr. Rajagopal told reporters on Wednesday that the LDF had included the issue in its election manifesto, but the State government had not yet placed a firm proposal about the jurisdiction of the Bench, facilities to be provided by the government and the proposal to foot the recurring expenses. This has been repeatedly clarified by the Union Law Ministry.

Though the LDF and the UDF had been supporting the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, neither front made a serious effort to secure the Bench. Had Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony mounted pressure on the Law Ministry, the Bench would have materialised.

Kerala was the only State without a High Court bench in the capital. The State government only had to consult the High Court Chief Justice and need not secure his consent. The government only needed a political will to get a favourable decision from the Centre, he said.
