Kakinada: The 42nd State Police Games and Sports Meet commenced here on Thursday. The inclement weather made the organisers change the venue of the inaugural function from the Police Parade Grounds to the APSP Grounds at the eleventh hour.

‘Ambassadors of peace’

Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju declared the games open as the chief guest. On the occasion, he appreciated the services being rendered by the police and hoped that they would continue to serve as ambassadors of peace.

He exhorted the contestants to establish new records and prepare to create history in the National Police Games.

State Minister for Social Welfare P. Subhaschandra Bose said team spirit shown by police personnel in such sporting events would help them a great deal in investigating crimes and maintaining law and order, which had become a daunting task for them in recent times.

Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi said such events enable the policemen and women, who are always burdened with duties, to keep themselves fit both physically and mentally. He thanked the Police Department for choosing East Godavari district as the host for the big event.

Additional Director-General of Police (Sports) J.V. Ramudu said the State police won 13 medals in the last year’s National Police Games and exuded confidence that they would do better this time.

Visakhapatnam City Police Commissioner N. Sambasiva Rao, Eluru Range DIG Ravi Gupta, East Godavari SP Y. Nagi Reddy, Additional SP A.V. Ranganath, Kakinada MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna, Zilla Parishad chairman Ch. Venugopala Krishna, MLAs D. Venkateswarulu and P. Dorababu, MLC N. Sesha Reddy and Deputy Mayor of Kakinada A. Srinivasa Rao were among those present.
