Irregularities alleged in rural job scheme

Widow and old-age pensions not being paid to 17 persons, it is alleged
VIZIANAGARAM: Former Navy official and leader of Cheraku Rythula Samkshema Samiti B. Venkata Ramana Rao told a press conference here on Thursday that irregularities to the tune of Rs.35 lakhs were detected in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme at Polada village in Jami mandal.

The irregularities came to light only after he obtained information under the Right to Information Act.
He said that the number of voters in the village was 489 and 150 of them, who were issued job cards, executed 29 works. But, irregularities had taken place in payments, he said, and displayed reports to substantiate his claim. Further, he said that widow and old-age pensions were not being paid to 17 persons in the village in spite of several representations submitted to the sarpanch.
Probe sought
He demanded an inquiry into the NREGP works and action against the officials. K. Chinna Appala Naidu and other village elders were present.
