KARUR: A total of 111 cadres belonging to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi were arrested when they staged a rail roko at Karur Junction on Thursday protesting the Centre for helping the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse. They alleged that the Sri Lankan Government was annihilating the Tamil population there in the ongoing crisis. The protests were held at Karur and Kulithalai junctions.

The VCK cadres first staged a protest demonstration in front of the Karur Railway Junction and stopped the Tiruchi-Karur Passenger train that arrived then. They raised slogans denouncing the Centre’s “support” to the Sri Lankan Government and Mr. Rajapakse. Police arrested a total of 48 persons in Karur Junction.

At Kulithalai, VCK cadres attempted to stage a rail roko but were thwarted in time. However police picked up 63 cadres for attempting to stage a rail roko. Members of the Karur Bar Association and the Karur Advocates Association also on Thursday boycotted courts in protest against the killing of innocent Tamilians in Sri Lanka.

Members of both the associations gathered in front of the court complex and raised slogans. Some advocates tried to burn the effigy of the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, which was prevented by police.

Thanjavur

As many as 56 cadres, including Unjai Arasan, State deputy general secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthai Katchi (VCK), were arrested here on Thursday when they tried to picket the Tiruchi-Tiruvarur passenger train at Thanjavur station demanding the Centre to take immediate steps to stop the killing of innocent Tamilians by the Lankan army.

Ariyalur

Nearly 200 members of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi belonging to Ariyalur and Perambalur districts were arrested for squatting on the railway track in the Ariyalur Railway Station on Thursday, condemning the Sri Lankan Government for its attack on Tamil civilians and the Central Government for providing support to the island nation.

With nearly 100 followers, the district unit secretary of VCK Advocate Tirumavalavan stood on the railway track at the station after garlanding the statue of Ambedkar and raised slogans demanding protection for Tamils. Later, the Perambalur district unit secretary came with over 100 partymen and detained the Guruvayur Express for about half an hour. The train suffered a detention of three hours en route due to similar agitations at Villupuram and Tindivanam stations.
