dated October 24, 1958: Nobel Prize for Literature

The Swedish Academy on October 23 awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize for literature to Boris Pasternak, Russian author of “Dr. Zhivago”, a best-selling novel in the West yet to be published in his own country. “Dr. Zhivago” depicts life in Russia during the last 40 years and contains criticism of the Soviet system. Russian authorities have rejected it as “not of sufficient literary value.” The citation read: “For his important achievement both in lyrical poetry and in the field of the Russian epic tradition.”
