Power of law: MDMK Treasurer M. Kannappan being taken to the police van after his arrest by the Q Branch police from his farm house at Aalampalayam near Pollachi on Thursday.

Pollachi: The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has bowed to pressure from the Congress in ordering suppressive measures, such as foisting of cases and arresting MDMK leaders, MDMK presidium president and Thondamuthur MLA M. Kannappan said on Thursday.

Mr. Kannappan, shortly before his arrest by Q Branch personnel, told reporters: “The DMK leader has been keen on wiping out the MDMK from the political arena for so many years and the decision to arrest now was also part of that ambition.

“The DMK is staying in power at the mercy of the Congress and wants to protect the seat of power, hence the suppressive measures,” he said. Mr. Kannappan was arrested at his farm house in Alampalayam, about seven km from Pollachi.

Commotion prevailed in front of his house when the police brought him out to make him board the police vehicle.

Agitated party cadres squatted in front of the police raising slogans accusing the DMK of pursuing anti-Tamil approach to stay in power.

The police served the arrest intimation on him in the presence of the media. Mr.Kannappan has been arrested under Sections 124 A (Sedition) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 13 (1) (d) (a) (b) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967. Q Branch sources said that the case was registered under crime number 3/2008 for the speech he made at a recent public meeting in Chennai.

Signing the arrest intimation and looking at the legal provisions invoked, Mr. Kannappan said he had “spoken nothing unlawful”.

Extending moral support to a banned outfit for a cause being pursued by it was not unlawful and the Attorney-General of the country had clarified this on earlier occasions.
