3 tourist destinations get bonanza from the Centre

Special assistance for development projects sanctioned


Sripuram Golden Temple, Amrithi Forest Balamathi Hills and Pulicat to benefit

Traffic interchange-cum-tourist facilitation centre to come up at Mamallapuram


CHENNAI: The Union Tourism Ministry has sanctioned special financial assistance to three destination development projects in Tamil Nadu.

The tourist attractions are, Sripuram Golden Temple and Amrithi Forest Balamathi Hills tourist spot in Vellore District; Pulicat in Tiruvallur District; and construction of a traffic interchange-cum-tourist facilitation centre at Mamallapuram.

Financial assistance

Giving details of the central financial assistance to Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, the State Tourism and Culture Department Secretary, V. Irai Anbu, told The Hindu that Rs.415.78 lakh has been released for development of Sripuram Golden Temple and Amrithi Forest Balamathi Hills tourist spot in Vellore District and a first instalment of Rs.332.62 lakh had been sanctioned as an advance for commencing the infrastructure related works.

With regard to Pulicat in Tiruvallur District, the Union Tourism Ministry has provided financial assistance to the tune of Rs.260 lakh and a first instalment of Rs.208 lakh has been released.

Information centre

Mr. Irai Anbu explained that construction of a tourist information centre at Andarmadam village, construction of rest sheds, and other infrastructure facilities would be added.

Mr. Irai Anbu said that Rs.366.03 lakh had been sanctioned by the Union Tourism Ministry for construction of an integrated bus stand and a traffic interchange-cum-tourist facilitation centre at Mamallapuram.

Better infrastructure

Besides taking up approach road improvement works, the parking areas for buses and four wheelers would be developed as part of this project. The first instalment of Rs.218.42 lakh had been released towards this project.

Mr. Irai Anbu said that for all the three destination developmental projects, the State Government will be setting up monitoring committee with a member drawn from the Union Tourism Ministry.
