THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Torrential rain lashed north Kerala for the second day on Friday as the cyclonic circulation that had taken birth off the Kanyakumari coast at the beginning of this week moved north to lie centred along the Lakshadweep-Mangalore stretch of the Arabian Sea. Vythiri, Kozhikode, Koyilandy and Vadakara recorded very heavy rainfall of 20 cm, 19 cm, 11 cm and 10 cm respectively during the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Friday. Mananthavadi in Wayanad district also received rainfall of 8 cm during this period. The downpour was continuing in the region right through Friday. The sweep of the cyclonic circulation, which brought heavy to very heavy rain in north Kerala, also extended across areas in Thrissur, Ernakulam and Palakkad. The Nedumbassery airport recorded heavy rainfall of 7 cm, while Thrissur received 3 cm. Rain was fairly widespread in Kerala, covering nearly 75 per cent of the State, with another rain-bearing system coming into play in south Kerala. A low pressure system has now taken shape over the Bay of Bengal along the Andhra Pradesh-north Tamil Nadu coast, according to M.D. Ramachandran, Director of the Thiruvananthapuram Meteorology Centre. The two systems, working simultaneously, are forecast to bring very heavy rain over nearly 25 per cent of the State’s territory during the next two days.
